I’ll also be helping out as a teaching assistant on two related lab sessions.

Both sessions (“Strobe: Building Media Experiences in Flash CS4 Professional” and “Adobe Strobe: Building Media Experiences in Flex“) are limited to a 100 attendees, so if you’re thinking about coming, make sure to sign up!

We’ve pushed version 0.4 of the Open Source Media Framework to the public SVN repository, and posted ZIPs for the source (+SWC) and ASDocs.  New features in this release include:

  • Error handling framework
  • Support for NetConnection reuse and port/protocol negotiation, and much better error handling when using NetConnections and NetStreams
  • Initial support for metadata, in the form of a metadata object model and resource-level metadata
  • More robust URL parsing, including FMS URLs

The sample loads a number of .shp and .dbf files from a FAR archive and then parses Mexico’s states, rivers and roads using the SHP lib. Next, the records get drawn using Flash’s drawing API, and last the names of the country’s major cities are read from a .dbf file using the DBF lib and placed on the map at their correct positions (parsed from yet another .shp file).

This format is used a lot with Geographical Information System (GIS). Using this lib it’s possible to have Flash read in GIS data, and have it render pretty pictures from it. At this time I don’t have a demo yet but I’m working on that, so stay tuned.

The lib currently support SHP files containing either Point, PointZ, Polygon or Polyline records.
